Renaissance faires in New Mexico
New Mexico's faire tradition reaches back further than most: the Renaissance ArtsFaire in Las Cruces has operated since 1971, was originally organized by Franciscan monks at the Holy Cross Retreat Center, and evolved into one of the largest arts events in southern New Mexico, drawing more than 90 artists and vendors to its 54th edition — though the Doña Ana Arts Council, its longtime organizer, closed in early 2026, leaving the faire's future unclear. The Celtic strand of the scene is just as deep-rooted: Albuquerque's Rio Grande Valley Celtic Festival marked its 38th edition in 2026 at Balloon Fiesta Park, anchored by a nine-event Scottish Heavy Athletics competition, from caber toss to sheaf toss, plus Highland dance competition. Rather than purpose-built faire grounds, the state's events tend to animate unusual venues: the Santa Fe Renaissance Faire runs as a fundraiser for El Rancho de las Golondrinas, the living history museum that hosts it, with its 17th annual edition drawing an estimated 5,000 visitors to see the Order of Epona jousting troupe, Scottish pipe-and-drum, and Irish dance. In Edgewood, the New Mexico Renaissance Celtic Festival began in 2022 with around 8,000 attendees at the Wildlife West Nature Park and Animal Sanctuary and has since grown to more than 20,000 visitors and 120 vendors across two weekends. The scene keeps expanding southward and into the mountains: the Cavern City Renaissance Festival in Carlsbad bills more than 110 artisan vendors alongside armored combat, while the Lincoln Forest Renaissance Faire in Ruidoso, produced by Oso Productions with sponsors and volunteers, reaches its third annual edition in 2026.
