Renaissance faires in Massachusetts

Massachusetts has anchored New England's renaissance faire scene since 1982, when Richard and Bonnie Shapiro — who had previously run a King Richard's Faire in Bristol, Wisconsin before selling it in 1988 — founded King Richard's Faire on 80 acres of pine forest in Carver, a site with permanent year-round structures and multiple stages that describes itself as the largest and longest-running renaissance faire in New England. That faire runs eight consecutive weekends from early September through mid-October, and in 2025 new ownership under Lancelot Entertainment Boston, LLC announced plans to relocate the event to the nearby Edaville Railroad. A newer wave of the state's scene grew out of Winchendon, where the Wyndonshire Renaissance Faire debuted at Winchendon Community Park in spring 2024 under creative directors Richard and Rajuli Fahey, trading strict historical accuracy for 'theatrical medievalism' — immersive skits and interlacing subplots designed to feel like walking into a work of medieval literature. The success of that volunteer-driven faire led to the founding of FaeGuild Wonders, an immersive theater company, which went on to partner with Red Apple Farm to create both the Enchanted Orchard Renaissance Faire and the NorthFolk NightMarket, a winter festival — giving north-central Massachusetts events that stretch across seasons rather than clustering in summer. The state's costumed-festival tradition also extends beyond the renaissance genre: Waltham's Watch City Steampunk Festival began in 2010 as a fundraiser for the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation after the museum suffered flood damage from the Charles River, drew over 1,000 people to its first event when only about 400 were expected, and has been led by organizer Melissa Honig since 2017.
