Renaissance faires in New Jersey
New Jersey's flagship event, the New Jersey Renaissance Faire, was conceived in 2009 by T.J. Miller, John Williams and Phil Leipf, staged its first single-weekend run in 2010 at Liberty Lake — where its fictional 'Village of Crossford' first opened its castle gates — and after 2020 relocated to the Burlington County 'Fairegrounds' in Columbus, where it now welcomes tens of thousands of patrons each season with its own education, marketing and stage-management departments. Its costumed cast also travels: the free spring faire on the village green at Historic Smithville features 'a host of colorful characters from the New Jersey Renaissance Faire.' In the state's northern Skylands, the Sparta NJ Renaissance Festival was founded in 2017 by James C. Kimball, who ran the live-action fantasy game Knight Realms for twenty years before buying Camp Sacajawea and developing the grounds with a permanent medieval and renaissance theme; the festival won Renaissance Magazine's 'Best New Faire of 2017,' expanded to three weekends by its sixth year, and draws repeat visitors from across the tri-state area. South Jersey adds a tradition found nowhere else: the Fantasy Faire at WheatonArts in Millville, produced in partnership with Mystic Realms, Ltd., folds the region's glass heritage into the festivities with a 'Royal Glassblowing Studio' where artists shape molten glass into fantastical objects alongside the Kingdom of Wheaton's Tournament of Prosperity. The scene also has a charitable side — the Medieval Jubilee at the Somerset County 4-H Center in Bridgewater is an annual fundraiser for the Somerset County 4-H Association, with the Society for Creative Anachronism among the participants. Together these events give New Jersey a faire season anchored by purpose-developed grounds in Sparta and Columbus, with LARP roots, glass-arts crossover and youth-charity fundraising setting the state's scene apart.
