Renaissance faires in Maine
Maine's costumed-festival scene is small but reaches from the state's southern border to its far northern and easternmost towns, and much of it is run by nonprofits and volunteers rather than commercial promoters. The state's flagship renaissance event, the Maine Renaissance Faire at the Acton Fairgrounds, was founded in 2019 and returned for its fifth season in 2024 with live shows on seven stages, a full armored joust by RoundTable Jousting, and more than 100 handmade-artisan vendors. In Aroostook County, the Realm of Twin Riverswood — a 501(c)(7) nonprofit — presented its Limestone faire for the sixth year in 2025; the local paper The County calls it the only known renaissance faire in northern Aroostook County presented by a nonprofit medieval educational organization, and it was a 2024 nominee in the Renaissance Festival Awards for New England themed festivals. On the coast, the Eastport Pirate Festival reached its twentieth year in 2025, a free-admission celebration with a pirate parade that draws visitors from across the United States and gives the small town's businesses a welcome boost at the end of the season. Scottish heritage runs unusually deep here — Maine has the highest percentage of people of Scottish descent of any U.S. state — and the Saint Andrew's Society of Maine, a nonprofit devoted to preserving Scottish culture, had hosted the Maine Highland Games and Scottish Festival for 46 years as of 2025. That festival moved to the 50-acre Windsor Fairgrounds after its previous Brunswick home, Thomas Point Beach & Campground, was sold to an owner who declined to host it; the move preserved its men's Scottish Heavy Athletics World Championship and let organizers plan for 5,000 to 10,000 visitors, well above the 3,500-person capacity of the old site.
