Renaissance faires in Rhode Island

Rhode Island's renaissance faire scene is young and small: the Ocean State Renaissance Faire in Wakefield has been described in local press as the one and only renaissance faire in the state, with a few earlier faires having existed in the past before eventually disappearing. It is put on by the Contemporary Theater Company and began in 2024 as a small one-day test event on the theater's performance patio to gauge community interest; strong attendance led organizers to expand it into a full weekend on the theater campus spilling into adjacent Saugatucket Park. The faire has since grown to a three-day format with four performance stages, and one recent edition drew about 3,500 guests. Its organizers deliberately position it as smaller, more intimate, and more affordable than the larger renaissance events elsewhere in the Northeast, and they emphasize recruiting local vendors and local performers; its theater roots show in offerings like live Dungeons and Dragons games and a 24-hour play written, rehearsed, and performed in a single day. The state's other recurring fantasy event is Fairy Garden Days at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center in Providence, the Botanical Center's annual fundraiser, which fills the greenhouses with themed displays of fairy houses — nearly 200 of them in one edition.
