Renaissance faires in North Dakota

North Dakota's renaissance faire scene is new by any measure: the first North Dakota Renaissance Faire opened in 2022, according to InForum. In 2023 the ND Renaissance Fair was welcomed to the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in West Fargo, where Red River Valley Fair CEO Cody Cashman said the association was 'so excited to have the ND Renaissance Fair at the Fairgrounds.' The Red River Valley Renaissance Faire is now an annual, two-weekend event each August at those fairgrounds, featuring armored knights jousting on foot and horseback alongside aerialists, belly dancers, jugglers and re-enactment camps, and faire organizer Sophia Thompson says the jousting is its biggest draw, with crowds picking a knight to cheer for. The state also puts its own rural stamp on the word 'renaissance': the Rural Renaissance Festival in Maddock is a fall harvest celebration organized, per the Jamestown Sun, 'to give people an opportunity to come together and celebrate life by enjoying the fall season as the area crops are coming in,' and its second annual edition drew more than 40 vendors along with blacksmithing demonstrations, a flea market and one of the state's largest corn mazes. On the fantasy side, the Fargo Park District hosted the first Fairy Fest at Yunker Farm Park in 2024, a free community event for children with a fairy parade, a scavenger hunt and fairy-garden building. Taken together, the state's costumed-festival calendar amounts to a handful of young events rather than a long-established circuit, with the West Fargo faire as its medieval centerpiece.
