Athena Caledonian Games

A Scottish heritage festival held each summer in Athena, in northeast Oregon, set among shade trees and surrounding wheat fields and presented as a tradition the community has preserved since the late 1800s. The day includes a parade, Highland athletic events such as the caber toss, bagpiping, Highland and Scottish dancing, traditional acoustic music, and sheepdog demonstrations. Clan tents representing families such as Bane, Farquharson and McMillan help visitors trace Scottish ancestry, while food vendors and craft merchants offer barbecue, baked goods, jewelry, carved horns, face painting and Renaissance clothing. Admission is free and the event is family-oriented.
